Modern office workers are busy and under a lot of pressure. Therefore, opening a small store and running their own business has become a dream for many young Taiwanese. As a result, many books introducing the running of small stores have appeared on the market. In particular, these books talk about how the cultural style of Japanese stores has mushroomed. In translation studies, scenery descriptions are rarely discussed. Most of these analyses look at textual style. This article uses expression analysis from published translations to understand translation strategies and their resultant problems when describing scenes in Chinese and Japanese. The landscape description chapters referred to in the article are as follows: chapters introducing guesthouses, coffee shops, bookstores, and home accessory stores. We divide the content into four major types for comparison: "natural scenery", "interior furnishings of stores", "outdoor space of stores", and "the overall atmosphere of stores". We discuss the differences in wording used when describing scenery in the Chinese and Japanese as well as use the means of description to understand the translation strategies and problems from published books. We provide an effective and specific reference for future guidance on translation strategy for scenery descriptions through analysis and the discussion of actual cases. |
