＂UFOgakushironioriru＂(『Shincho』1999.8, hereinafter referred to as ＂UFO＂) is a short story of Haruki Murakami , created after the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake. Mrs. Komura had been watching TV news from morning to night for 5 days after the earthquake even there was no friends or relatives in the stricken area. On the sixth day, Mr. Komura found out that his wife left a note and disappeared. Before long, he received a divorce settlement from his wife’s parents’ and was forced to accept the divorcement. His colleague, Mr.Sasaki, after knowing him applied for a 7-day leave, asked him bringing a parcel to his sister in Kushiro, Hokkaido. The story among Sasaki's sister, Keiko and her friend ,Ms.Shimao then starts from the moment Komura arrives Kushiro Airport. Murakami mentioned that ＂Describing what the earthquake brought in a symbolic way. In other words, observing the essentiality by discussing'other things'＂.Indeed, there are so many marvelous things hardly happened in the real world in ＂UFO＂, which seems like a clue to something symbolic. What in the world is that Murakami’s ＂what the earthquake brought＂, which is also ＂the essentiality of the thing?＂I believes that this is the key to interpret ＂UFO＂.This essay is to provide some new understanding of ＂UFO＂by analyzing the hero, Komura and grasping his changing mental processes. |
