This longitudinal research aims to present and discuss the use ofJapanese conditionals observed in the written and spoken language of aTaiwanese learner of JFL, who had majored in Japanese language in auniversity in Taiwan.I surveyed the short essays written by her and the transcribedconversation talking about the essays with a interlocutor, collectedalmost every month for a period of three years and a half. Conditionalsentences were picked up from the essays and transcriptions, andclustered by markers and functions, and then the correct uses and errorswere also counted. My study has led to the following findings:1) Some differences between the written and spoken language wereobserved. The timing of the emergence of correct use, the types ofconditionals, and quality/quantity of errors were not the same.2) The spoken language showed some developmental stages, while thewritten language did not.Assuming the background of the observed phenomena, and focusingon the developmental difference between the written and spoken language,I described an developmental overview of use of conditionals by thelearner, and discussed the problem propounded by the overview. |
