This paper finds that China has developed deep interdependentrelationships in Asia through trade, investment and aid over the past decade. Many Asian countries depend heavily on the wealth generated in China sincethe Reform and Opening Up period. China is now actively promoting the‘Belt and Road Initiative’ (BRI) to improve Asia’s infrastructuredevelopment, business environment and connectivity. This also makes theAsian market more accessible to China, helping to sustain China’s rapideconomic development. However, to downplay outsider’s concern forChina’s emergence in Asia, China has to take heed of its over-exploitivebusiness model, as well as maintaining an Asian Infrastructure InvestmentBank that is compliant with the existing order. Otherwise, Chineseengagement in Asia might confront local, or even a region-wide, backlash. |
