During the jiajing and wanli periods the industry of popular publishing establishments was flourishing. Its publishers have become the communicators of culture implicitly by their effort to publish books. They published various kinds of books, especially reference books for the imperial examination, popular and practical books. Among them encyclopedias were very popular because of the diversity of content which was also easy to consult and recite. Rijigushi were one of the most popular books of the time. Rijigushi were considered a primer and was published by bookstores continuously because of its educational functions. Rijigushi were imported from China to Japan during the Tokugawa period (1603–1868). From all Rijigushi editions, Xinqie Leijie Guanyang Rijigushi Daquan was the only one to be registered in the Edo publishing directory. This research will study this encyclopedia from the point of view of East Asian publishing culture to discuss three main topics as follows: 1. It analyzes the compilation features of Xixie Leijie Guanyang Rijigushi Daquan in view of the recurring theme of the filial son, the Ming Dynasty stories and the women's categories in this book. 2. It studies the publications of this book in Edo Japan and its relation to the booksellers in Osaka. 3. It examines the question of the spread of other Rijigushi texts in Edo Japan by analyzing Chiying Rijigushi and Yangzheng Rijigushi. With this research I hope to provide a new insight into the circulation of knowledge in East Asia. |
