Yiyan Sun(1815-1894), a noted scholar and ancient literature expert in thelate Qing Dynasty, devoted his life to the sorting and study of local literaturedocument. His depository of scriptures, Yuhai Pavilion, was one of the largestfour in Zhejiang. He wrote Collection from Xunxue Cabinet (Xunxue Zhai Ji),and edited Collection of Native Sages and Foreign Scholars on Yongjia(Yongjia Neiwai Ji), Anecdotes from Ouhai Area (Ouhai Yiwen), and YongjiaSeries (Yongjia Cong Ji). The appearance of Yongjia Series started a culturalmovement on collecting, searching, and sorting lost works by native sages in thearea of Wenjou. Meticulously proofread, Sun’s Yongjia Series that includes 13major works from scholars of Yongjia schools is of priceless value in philology. His following Calligraphy Prints on Shrines for Yongjian Poets (YongjiaShiren Citang Cong Ke) and Jingxiang Pavilion Series (Jingxiang Lou CongShu) both show a heritage of the spirit extremely close to that of Yongjia Series. |
