The goal of this paper is to explore availability of interpreting classical Chinese texts of Zuozhuan via evidence of grammar and discourse. It begins with setting up correlations between sentence types, which include behavioral sentences, topic sentences, logic sentences, and sentences with markers of locutionary subjectivity as well, and three basic discourse types, i.e., narrating, expository, and evaluative types. The template of short narrative works of Zuozhuan is, then, analyzed in terms of discourse types. After that, it is demonstrated how contextual factors are incorporated into the discourses and enrich textual meanings. |
