OuYang-HouJyun (1766-1846) was born in Anren County, Hunan province. During the Ching dynasty, he was one of the four deans running Yuelu Academy (嶽麓 書院) for 27 years. His principle of education is mainly based on "honesty", and emphasizes the notion of "governing studying of very practical use". He was the master of many famous Ching dynasty officials, such as Zeng Guofan(曾國藩) and Tso ZhongTang (左宗棠). "The Book of Changes" is the basis for OuYang-HouJyun's teaching, and he especially emphasizes the idea of "governing studying of very practical use". Such theory is the legacy fromHuxiang School. The scholars of Huxiang School all held the opinion that "The Book of Changes" has the adaptive feature, which is whenever, wherever and whoever suitable for practical use. They oppose to be simply limited by the meaning of signs. This thesis is mainly to discuss the ideas presented above, and hopefully this thesis will be the key-stone for future researches. |
