In 2006, 5,808 Syphilis cases were confirmed (incidence rate = 25.45 / 105), which increased from the 5,305 confirmed cases (incidence rate = 23.34 / 105) in 2005. The characteristics of confirmed Syphilis cases are as follows: The sex ratio was 2.1 (2.1: 1.0), with 3,959 male cases (68.2%) and 1 ,849 female cases(31.8%). Among them, the number of cases ages 40-64 were highest (n = 2,254, 38.8%), followed by those older than 65 (n = 1 ,332, 22.9% ), ages 15-24 (n = 498, 8.6% ), and ages 0 (n = 42, 0.7%) Cases occurred year-round with a wide geographical distribution. The number of casesresidency was highest in Taipei County (n = 1,212, 20.9%), followed by Taipei City (n = 947,16.3% ), Taoyuan County (n = 680, 11.7% ), Kaohsiung City (n = 393, 6.8%) and Kaohsiung County (n = 380, 6.5%). Lien-Chiang County did not have any reported cases. The incidence rate in each jurisdiction was highest in Taipei City (36.09 / 105), followed byTaoyuan County (35.87 / 105) and llan City (35.57 / 105).
