In 2006, 13 Meningococcal Meningitis cases were confirmed (incidence rate = 0.06 / 105) which was about a quarter less than 20 confirmed cases (incidence rate = 0.09 / 105) in 2005. The characteristics of confirmed Meningococcal Meningitis cases are as follows: The sex ratio was 0.43 (1.0:2.3), with 4 male cases (30.8%) and 9 female cases (69.2%). Among them, incidence was highest for individuals of age 40-64 years (n = 4, 30.8%), followed by those: aged 1-4 (n = 3, 23.1% ), less than 1 years of age and elder than 65 years old (n =2, 15.4%, respectively) and aged 5-14 and 25-39 (n = 1, 0.8%). Cases occurred year-round, most of them occurred during June to September (n = 9, 69.2%) and November to January (n = 4, 30.8%). The geographical distribution of Meningococcal Meningitis cases were highest in Tauyuan County and Taichung City (n = 2, 15.4%), and Taipei County, Hsinchu City, Hsinchu County, Chanhwa County, Yunlin County, Chiayi County, Tainan County, Kaoshiung County and Hwalien County (n =1, 0.8%, respectively). There were no cases reported from the other jurisdictions. The incidence rates were highest in the Hwalien County (0.29 / 105), followed by Hsinchu City (0.25 / 105) and Hsinchu County (0.21 / 105). |
