This paper discusses Zhu Xi’s association with the Liu family to clarify Zhu Xi’s early life and academic development. After his father died, Zhu Xi received financial and academic support by establishing teacher-and-student and marital relationships with the Liu family. We discuss Zhu Xi’s attitudes toward the Liu family and his help to the family. Then, we show that Zhu Xi and the Liu family held different opinions about Cheng Study, especially on the compilation of the Collected Works of Cheng Brothers. Zhu Xi didn’t follow Liu Gong’s emphasis on Hu Anguo’s version. Instead, he followed the Cheng Brothers as much as possible. He would not like to be partial to Cheng Yi, either. He contemplated the compilation from the perspective of moral practice. These factors have illustrated that although Zhu Xi was inspired by Liu Zihui and others to elaborate the philosophy of Cheng Brothers at his youth, he developed a different focus on the contents of Cheng Study. |
