Building and Evaluating an Evidence-Based Medicine Assisted Clinical Decision Support System

A CAGES (computer assisted guideline enhancement system) is built to help doctors instead of only limiting them. An on-line system, which integrates the evidence-based clinical guideline into the electronic patient records, was established in a regional hospital. We took the hyperlipidemia treatment ATP III (Adult Treatment Panel III) guideline as the intervention. When the anti-hyperlipidemia medicine is keyed into the computer, the system will be triggered. The CAGES can assist doctors to make decision of the medication. A just-in-time decision support system (DSS) in office can not only contribute to the future development of DSS, but also a part of the continuing medical education (CME).
