All Verb + zhe + Adjective structures in Mandarin look alike, but their syntax and semantics vary a great deal. This paper attempts to differentiate these various structures according to their syntactic forms, semantic orientations, and lexical features; this is done by applying Argument Structure Theory, Semantic Orientation Theory, and Lexical Semantic Feature Theory. We also explain the different grammatical functions of V zhe, as well as the nature of zhe in this structure. In addition to describing the lexical and semantic conditions differentiating these structures, a purpose of this discussion is also to indicate the implications of lexical semantic analytical methods for syntactic studies. |
