Correctly differentiating the “literary” stratum from the “colloquial” in various Chinese dialects naturally requires the establishment of an accurate chronology of sound changes. This study describes procedures for reconstructing these two strata in the Shanxi dialects. The results presented here—bringing to bear the case of three literary-vs.-colloquial alternations in the Suzhou dialect—are at apparent odds with Ting’s 2002 conclusions in the matter. |
