An Exploration of Proto-Min Reconstruction

本文作者對羅杰瑞先生的原始閩語構擬一直持有不同意見。這些不同意見最初是出於傳統的認識和某種語感，後來隨著對語言接觸產生相互影響瞭解的增多，逐漸明確了羅杰瑞先生構擬的問題所在──把語言接觸的結果當作了語言演變的證據。作者感受到個人進步與學術發展之間的聯繫。

The author disagrees totally with Jerry Norman’s reconstruction of Proto-Min phonology. Doubts began after the author’s traditional training and his intuition about dialectology; and with a growing appreciation of language-contact phenomena, he gradually cleared up the main difficulty with Norman’s reconstruction: language contact is regarded as evidence of language change. This particular issue points up the close relationship between the work of an individual scholar and its effect on the development of the field as a whole.
