The author disagrees totally with Jerry Norman’s reconstruction of Proto-Min phonology. Doubts began after the author’s traditional training and his intuition about dialectology; and with a growing appreciation of language-contact phenomena, he gradually cleared up the main difficulty with Norman’s reconstruction: language contact is regarded as evidence of language change. This particular issue points up the close relationship between the work of an individual scholar and its effect on the development of the field as a whole. |
