The aim of this study was to investigate the oral hygiene knowledge, attitude and behaviors of the caregivers of preschool children. The primary caregivers of a 4 to 6 years old child are his/her parents. The results of this study can provide suggestions to those caregivers to reduce preschool children dental caries. The survey took samples from the primary caregivers of 4to 6 years old children in public preschools in Taoyuan County in 2009. A total 171 effective samples were collected. The main results of this study were as follows: 1. There are positive correlations between social-economic status and oral hygiene knowledge and attitude. High family social-economic status group had higher oral hygiene knowledge then the mediums group. High family social-economic status group had higher oral hygiene attitude then the lower group. Oral hygiene attitude and oral hygiene behaviors are positive correlated. 2. The oral hygiene knowledge is negative correlated with primary caregivers’ age. 3. Based on the results, oral hygiene attitude is the best predictor for hygiene behavior and can explain 24% of total variance. Since the dental caries conditions of preschool children are highly correlated with family social-economic status, more public resources should be provided to make up the gaps between families. It is suggested to provide public dental clinic in preschool and oral hygiene education for those primary caregivers. |
