C. B. Macpherson's criticism of the liberal-democratic theory is embedded in his comparative and historical way of argumentation, which connects pastand present to the possible desirable future with the dialectical interaction between ethical ideas and political economy. Such way of doing history reflects the unique characteristic of Macpherson's methodological style. This paper selects some substantial discussion of his theory, but focuses on the relevant methodological significance. The paper tries to show up how Macpherson takes history, theory and logic reconsiderations into the same process of theory criticism and theory building. Macpherson's "historical' restructure of political theory may be valuable and still critical to contemporary theorists. |
