This examines the Tao philosophy as presented in Taiwanese aboriginalwriter Shammon Lanpoan’s book Memories of Waves published in 2002.Memories is the fourth work by Lanpoan, ten years apart from his first bookLegends of Badai Bay appearing in 1992. This book testifies thedevelopment of Lanpoan’s writing career and his negotiation between Taoand Han cultures. It shows Lanpoan as an accomplished writer, inparticular, his appropriation of Chinese language in presenting his aboriginalperspective. This paper is divided into five sections: background of thewriter, philosophy in Memories of Waves, characteristics of language, diaspora in Lanpoan’s literature and conclusion. Through textual analysis, Iwill elaborate characteristics of Lanpoan’s writing and argue that Lanpoan’snarrative presents a cultural subjectivity of Tao aboriginals whereas, at thesame time, demonstrates the nature of diaspora in his literature. |
