This essay addresses the logic and the movement of the signifier in the Lacanian framework, based on its functioning in the register of the Symbolic across both that of the Imaginary and the Real. Regarding the Imaginary-Symbolic axis, by highlighting the barred relationship between the signifier and the signified, this part explores the unstable nature of meaning and the way meaning effects are produced in signifying chain. As for the Symbolic-Real divide, the creationist view of language that pure signifier names nothing is specified and the materiality of signifier, as closely related to the concept of objet petit a, is presented as the hard kernel beyond language which nonetheless drives language. By developing the triadic structuration of language, this essay elaborates the primordial condition that human beings enter into with language and reveals the dynamic process through which the signifying chain is triggered and proceeds to move endlessly. |
