The objective of this study is to describe an effective technique for management of pharmacy inventories of a medical center in the south part of Taiwan. Pharmacists should use some modern techniques, such as ABC inventory theory and activity-based analyses to manage pharmacy inventories, including decreasing inventory, increasing turnover ratio. Additionally, replacement-and-elimination of drugs with low turnover ratio, controlling formulary additions, appropriate selection of generic equivalents with GMP for all multi-source drugs and using computer- assisted monitoring health care system's operations can be used in order to decrease the inventories of pharmaceuticals. By using available computer technology, these objectives were accomplished. Cost containment strategies were performed from Aug 1,1998 to July 31,2001 and monitoring process was enforced. The results showed that the inventories decreased by 14.9%, turnover ratio increased from 16.4 to 35.6, about 100 drugs were removed from the formulary, and savings generated by using tender contract was 20% of purchase cost |
