This article reviews the sky walk construction project in Chia-Yi Christian Hospital. The article discusses how a hospital can plan for the integration of new structures with existing facilities while meeting the needs of the organization and fulfill its social responsibilities. After performing case studies of similar projects both in Taiwan and abroad, the following elements were considered during the design process: patients and other pedestrians’ convenience and safety, air ventilation of the sky walk, comfortableness of using the sky walk, and cover for both sun light and rain. At the same time, the sky walk should keep a modern and simple design that improves the cityscape. Lastly, an evaluation of the impact to surface traffic is done to give a better understanding of the need for such a project by analyzing the pedestrian’s volume and usage. The original estimate of traffic during daytime is 2,500 people. Actual traffic for entering and exiting the building reaches 5,000, which greatly exceeds original estimation. Survey of the satisfaction of the sky walk indicates overall satisfaction at 8.4 points. The populace is generally satisfied by the convenience and value of the sky walk, as expected during the planning and design phrases. The convenience and safety provides by the sky walk can increase the willingness of the populace to use the sky walk, thus improving patients, pedestrians, and medical staffs’ safety. Carefully design to balance urban landscape and traffic environment, beautiful and functional, allows the hospital to perform its role of maintaining social responsibilities, and indirectly improves the hospital image and reputation. |
