Objectives: To explore the potential pitfalls of using the database of Web of Science (WoS) (issued by Institute of Scientific Information) for evaluating academic achievement in medical centers. Methods: Based on the results of the accreditation of medical centers in central Taiwan, we selected Chinese Medical College Hospital (CMCH), Changhua Christian Hospital (CCH) and Taichung Veterans General Hospital (TCVGH) in this study. Using WoS database in 2002, the total number of the published articles, impact factors of the journals, h-index and the average citation number were analyzed. Results: The results of comparison of academic achievement among three medical centers were different, pending on which indicators were used. CMCH takes the lead in the categories of the total number of the published articles and the h-index. TCVGH has the highest average impact factors of the journals on which their articles were published. Although the rank of average citation number is TCVGH > CMCH > CCH, the difference was not statistically significant (p=0.324). Conclusions: Using the database of WoS for evaluating the academic achievement in medical centers needs special consideration. Due to its own intrinsic characteristics, each indicator from the database of WoS reflects different status of academic achievement. Careful selection of appropriate weighing indicator(s) is recommended during hospital accreditation process. |
