Objectives: The purposes of this study were to investigate the knowledge and attitude toward medical dispute administrative mediation of physicians in charge of hospitals and clinics, and their experiences. Methods: This research was conducted by a questionnaire survey (1,281 questionnaires were distributed with a valid response rate of 25.21%). The content of the questionnaire includes four sections: the knowledge scale, the attitude scale, medical dispute experiences and the characteristics of respondents. Results: The results indicated that 41.18% of the respondents have ever encountered medical disputes in the past; 90.96% of the responding physicians have a good understanding of medical dispute administrative mediation and only 3.10% of them have a negative attitude. The physicians’ gender will influence the level of knowledge. The physicians’ age, knowledge of administrative mediation and medical dispute experiences will influence their attitude toward administrative mediation. Conclusions: Although most in-charge-physicians are familiar with this statutory administrative mediation system, the utilization rate is still low. Concern about the pressure from government authorities appears to be a major deterrent from filing for administrative mediation. The health bureaus should strive to establish and promote a neutral and impartial image so as to facilitate the resolution of medical disputes |
