Considering human resource and value, the adult education has become a very important issue in developing the human capital investment. Thus, how to properly give instruction to adult is obviously very important. However, the teaching style of teachers always effect the adult learning. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to explore the teaching style of the supplementary school teachers at the elementary school level in Taipei in order to improve their teaching effectiveness for the adult. Based on literature review and theoretical analysis, Conti’s (1978) Principles of Adult Learning Scale was adopted as the survey instrument. One hundred and eight samples were responded that scale. The data was collected and analyzed, and it results indicated as follows:(1)There was 81.5 per cent of the teachers in supplementary schools at the elementary school level in Taipei over the age of 40 and 75 per cent of the teachers had been teaching in elementary schools over twenty years. (2)There are two kinds of teaching styles (student-centered and teacher-centered). On the whole, samples showed a tendency toward student-centered. Also, the teachers just emphasized lightly on the aspects of personalizing instruction, relating to experience, assessing student needs, and climatc building. Whereas, they ignored the aspects of participation in the learning process and flexibility for personal development.(3)The teaching style of the teachers was influenced by age and sex variables. According to the findings above, this study suggests:(1) The researchers of the future should use teachers’self report scale, students’evaluation and ones,observation to get more objective results.(2)The educational authority should take some policies to provide teachers’in-service education to improve their ability of teaching for the adult. (3)The educational authority should have some strategies to cope with the problem of the influence of the teachers’age and sex. |
