Sign systems are among the most basic, and at the same time most indispensable, forms of library instruction. Library signs identify and locate the building for the user, provide information on the services available and how to use them, direct the flow of traffic, and generally create an atmosphere of welcome. Library signs are far too often inadequate. It would seem that the most obvious criteria are not really considered by many planners. Depending on the review of literature, this paper describes the nature and function of library sign systems, the basic approaches most commonly taken by libraries in dealing with the need for sign systems and introduces the major stages in a signing project: background research, schematic design, design development, fabrication/installation, evaluation, maintenance. |
