Sleep medicine is a rapidly growing subspecialty of medicine. Due to the fact that behavioral and psychological factors have great impacts on sleep, psychology has been an important approach to facilitate the understanding, evaluation and treatment of sleep disorders. This article reviews the historical context of the development of sleep medicine from a psychological perspective. The application of clinical psychology in the practice of sleep medicine is also described. Furthermore, future directions regarding the allocation of manpower and the establishment of training programs are also suggested. It is now a crucial time for the establishment of sleep medicine in Taiwan. Therefore, in order to provide the patients with a better service, it is important to enhance the awareness of the role of clinical psychologist in this field. |
