Cervical cancer has been the most prevalent cancer of female genital tract in Taiwan. The mortality rates will likely decline in the future because of the introduction of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine. The vaccine will possibly have prophylactic or even treatment effect for invasive cervical cancer as well as its obligate precursor, cervical intraepithelial neoplasia. Some western countries have launched HPV vaccination program on a regular basis. Taiwan’s Department of Health approved the HPV vaccine in 2007. As health care professionals, it is important for us to have better knowledge about the vaccine. In this article we reviewed the development and usage of the vaccine and compared different vaccines that have been introduced. We recommend that in order to prevent the disease, sufficient information should be provided to the public, vaccination and regular cervical smear program need to be promoted, and practice of safe sex with condom use needs to be emphasized. If the females to whom the vaccine is administered have right attitude regarding the use of the vaccine and follow the recommendations and instructions of health care professionals, it is possible that the incidence rate of cervical cancer could reduce eventually. |
