This case study applied Roy’s theory to assist a mother of a 31-week premature baby adapting the role of motherhood. The baby boy has three hospitalization records since he was born, including one at the pediatric intensive care after birth, one for restless at night, and one for an episode of burning. The theory of Roy’s models such as physiological, self-conceptual, role functional, and interdependent adaptive model were applied during nursing process. The author continued to follow and assist the mother and visited her again after the child was discharged. Behavior observation and content analysis were used to collect and analyze the data. Four major nursing problems identified included risk for impaired mother/infant attachments, risk for caregiver role strains, disabled family coping, and situational low self-esteem. Through the author’s efforts of adequate nursing strategies, the mother’s ability of child caring improved significantly. |
