Needlestick injuries are the most severe occupational hazards among health care workers and nurses are usually at the highest risk. Between January 2001 and June 2004, the incidence of needlesticks in the Gastroenterology ward of a medical center had increased from 0.77% to 1.63%. About 55% of the needlestick victims had not received working educational training, and 40.2% had not followed the procedure of handling sharp devices. Therefore, a program was set up to control this problem. After intensive educational training program on appropriate use of protective devices to avoid sharp injuries, there has been no needlestick event occurring during this period. In addition, this program reduced the incidence of improper handling of sharp devices from 40.2% to 7.6%. We concluded that the intervention program could effectively reduce the incidence of needlestick injuries in this ward. |
