The goal of this study was to investigate the psychosocial responses and coping strategies in the epilepsy. Participants were recruited from epilepsy patients at an outpatient unit in a medical center in eastern Taiwan. Data were collected by repeated interviews and observations. In the psychological aspect, participants expressed emotional changes, including awareness of worthlessness, fear, stigma, anger, and hopelessness. Social function included two components, personal relationships and career development. The personal relationship component included social sparseness, social limit, and support from friends and relatives. The career development component included awareness of failing to work, fear of being rejected by employers, being rejected directly, and being accepted after notification. Participants took different coping strategies when they were under pressure. Some chose to face problems, the others were dispirited. The study can serve as a preliminary assessment of psychosocial responses and coping strategies in the epilepsy. |
