Product form design and ideas are indispensable techniques of designers. The external stimulus often triggers designers to generate creative and valuable products. Particularly, the application of digital design information has been a new tool in the development of knowledge, experience and ideas. The objective of this study is to use different perceptual adjectives to capture the form element of the portable multimedia digital products, and to help designers establish a product form element integration system at the design development stage. Designers can rapidly use the system to integrate the appearance of products. Furthermore, in the product form development stage, designers can understand product images via this system. This study is divided into 5 stages. The first stage is the classification and choice of form elements. Through the interview with experts, the form elements of 65 types of portable audio-video products found in market were identified. The CAD software was used to perform 2D form element scanning from which 42 types of form elements could be specified, including 15 total form elements, 15 input form elements and 12 output form elements. In the second stage, 100 pairs of perceptual adjectives for portable audio-video products were collected. Through the subjective screening, 61 pairs were chosen and further divided into three types in the semantic differential method: appraisal, strength and action types. Then from the questionnaire investigation in the third stage, eight groups were chosen finally. According to the screened samples from Stages one and two, the relationships between form elements and perceptual adjectives were investigated. From the average of broken-line graph, the differences among one element and the others could be investigated from analysis of form imagery at Stage 4. At Stage 5, the degree value of each form element on each perceptual adjective can be built by using Visual Basic as the system language. From the searching and integration by the users, several concrete appearances of the products can be obtained. Moreover, the accumulation and passing on of design knowledge are shared between experienced and junior designers from the platform of element integration system. In this kind of training mode, designers can rapidly get the requirements and conditions of customers in hand, adding variety and wholeness to product form design. |
