In the past two years, the shortage of nurses in Taiwan worsens clinical nurses' workload that causes increased stress for nurses. A vicious cycle between nursing shortage and workload increase not only negatively impacts quality of care, but also becomes one of the largest challenges that nurse leaders face. Therefore, this article discusses the current status of nursing shortage in Taiwan and causes of nurses' leaving their careers. Through literature review, the author probes what tasks nurses care about and what nurse leaders should do nowadays. This article suggests the 2 C 2S of caring philosophy that has been used effectively and successfully during nurse shortages in the past. It also emphasizes that nursing leaders have the abilities of being spiritual teachers, handling stress, and promoting emotional intelligence. Through self-change and self-expectation, nursing leaders may assist nurses in overcoming the crisis due to the imbalance between work and life, further promoting quality of care and retention rate of nurses. |
