The construct of perceived freedom of leisure has been recognized its tremendous influence on other leisure and work attitudes in the western leisure study communities about two decades, but it is scarcely discussed by the local leisure researchers. In particular, the relationship between leisure and work has been controversial --contrary or supplementary to each other? In addition to introducing and reviewing the literature of perceived freedom of leisure to the local leisure community, the major objective of the study is to empirically examine the relationships of perceived freedom with other leisure attitudes and especially the work satisfaction. After interviewing 1,068 adults in the Taipei metropolitan areas, the study identifies the important role of percevied freedom of leisure and the other leisure attitudes, such as leisure involvement, leisure needs, and leisure satisfaction. All these leisure contructs are strongly correlated to each other. Perceived freedom of leisure also has strong regresslonal coefficients on all these leisure attitudes and work satisfaction. Such empirical evidence may support the positively supplementary rather than contrary relationships in the philosophical debates in the mass society. |
