Purpose: To examine the value added to production and structure of the sports industry in Taiwan. Methods: The authors estimate the total product and value added from the production side. Using the Industry, Commerce and Service Census data of 2001 by DGBAS to estimate Taiwan's production output of sports industry. Results: The total product of the Taiwan's sports industry is about NT$200 billion. Deducting the value of intermediate goods, the value added of the sports industry is about NT$82.6 billion. This reflects that the additional value rate is 41.32%, which accounts for 0.87% of the gross domestic product (GDP). The production of the sports industry is mainly accounted for by the manufacturing of the sports goods, especially the bicycle production. The wholesale of the sports goods stands on the second place, which accounts for approximately 20% of the value added to production. The construction of the sports facilities, retailing and services related to the sports industry all account for about 10% of the sports industry, respectively. Conclusion: Comparing to the Western countries, the Taiwan's production of the sports industry is low. This reflects that the sports industry in Taiwan deserve more attention and development. |
