本研究目的在詮釋查理布萊特比爾（Brightbill,C.K.,1910－1966）的休閒思想精髓與應用層面，並探討他對美國在休閒專業領域發展之影響。採用文獻分析法，論述布萊特比爾的生平與價值理念、當時社會環境與思潮。焦點放在布萊特比爾休閒思想觀與其休閒思想應用與落實的層面，以及對社會的影響等問題。本研究得知，布萊特比爾秉持休閒即是一種生活哲理、態度與方式的信念，堅信休閒具有健康促進、教育功能及塑造個人性格與品德的價值，位居政府機構之休閒要職，負責管理、監督休閒相關方案，落實軍中、社區與公共休閒服務之任務，促使美國人民在戰亂與經濟不景氣中能夠調和、平衡生活，且於戰後能夠享受生活，擁有高品質的生活經驗。更甚者，超凡的哲學智慧與學術領導風格，更引領休閒至崇高地位。身為休閒改革運動鬥士，布萊特比爾在晚年面對惡性腫癌，還能盡為人師之職，產出曠世鉅作，影響當代與後世甚遠。因此，探討這樣具有當代休閒倡導代表性人物，後人實能窺知當代社會面貌的真實寫照，了解美國休閒社會運動發展脈絡，以認識這項社會運動在過去與現在之間的關聯，進而作為臺灣在休閒領域發展上的借鏡，以及擴充休閒學術研究範圍，提供休閒思想新視野，這也是本研究欲表達之意義。

The aim of this study was to explore the major recreational concept of Charles K. Brightbill (1910-1966) and his influence upon the developments taking place within the professional field of recreation in America. The method was documentary analysis in order to expound Brightbill's life, value idea and the trend of the social thought of the day. The focuses were what the recreational concept of Bringtbill was, how it was put in practice, and how it influenced the life of the American people. Findings showed that Brightbill insist that recreation was a kind of the philosophy, attitude and way of an individual's life. He believed that recreation could improve health, educate and shape individuals' characteristics and morality. Brightbill took responsibilities for the management and supervision of the recreational projects in the army, community and public service during working in the government agencies. The efforts of his work included clearing up the social problems resulted from economic depression and war, and increasing the quality life in America. His outstanding philosophical wisdom and brilliant leadership put recreation to the top position. As a crusader within the recreation movement, Brightbill faced on his incurable malignancy of the bone marrow with keen sense of humor and still did what he should do – teaching, writing and participating in professional affairs. Maybe Brightbill's greatest influence upon the recreation movement was through his philosophical writings. Therefore, by studying a representative, such as Brightbill, people in Taiwan can learn of the social facts of the day, understand the development of the recreation movement in America.
