This Preliminary Study focused on all the works which were awarded the Mobile Literature Award presented by Taiwan Mobile Co., Ltd., from the inception of the award in 2007 to 2013, investigating the meaning of these works in popular culture. By affiliating itself with the telecommunications provider, text message literature broadens its distribution and inspires change. Despite being under the direction of Taiwan Mobile, text message literature displays decentralized and diverse expression due to participation by the public. As such, Taiwan's text message literature is not solely part of the cultural industry controlled by mainstream values, not a celebration completely controlled by the public, but a Neo-Gramscianism entity that expresses the agency of the public within a structure and uses this agency to justify the existence of the structure. The meaning of Taiwan's text message literature within popular culture is in using a prevalent medium, cell phones, to increase opportunities for the public to express themselves and create culture, thereby constructing more meaning. |
