The importance of holistic care in family medicine can't be overemphasized. The differences between family physicians and specialists lie in not only the pervasive medical knowledge owned by family physicians competent in dealing with any chief complaint brought up by patients, but also the will to take the responsibilities of the patients' whole health and the dedication to keep an intimate and trusty doctor-patient relationship. In this article, we explored the role of doctor-patient relationship in family medicine practice, the impact of doctor-patient relationship on outcome of patients, and the ways to facilitate doctor-patient communication. We also discussed the differences between "illness" and "disease", patient-centered medicine, and the application of the Balint group in family physician training. We expect to rethink the significant meaning of humanity in family medicine through different points of view. |
