It is unclear whether translation studies are yet recognized as an independent academic discipline. The National Science Council in Taiwan has categorized it as a sub-discipline under linguistics. Increasing the quality, breadth and depth of research into the multi-dimensional mental activity that is translation may help translation studies become an accepted academic discipline. As B. Hatim (2001, p.9) has pointed out, the status of translation studies has been improved by the establishment of departments of translation and interpretation studies training interpreters and translators, increased research interest from academics in other fields, and an increase in published research, academic exchanges and discussion worldwide. These factors promote translation studies as an independent academic field, and they are all directly related to the development of translation research. |
