From July 25 to August 8, 2024, the authors participated in a learning away from home program cum the Hakka Township Southbound Exchange Project, during which a preliminary field investigation was carried out in Miri City and Marudi Town. This fieldwork note first outlines the demographic composition and Hakka communities in Miri and Marudi. It then examines Hakka Chinese culture in Miri through three focal aspects: social associations, settlements, and architecture. The research note concludes by proposing directions for future ethnographic research and suggesting further engagement with theoretical discussions on ethnicity.
