The study aims to understand the development of curriculum reform on history textbooks in Chinese independent secondary schools in Malaysia since 1970s from the perspective of transformation of Chineseness from Malaysian Chinese. With the establishment of the United Chinese Schools Committees of Dong Zong in 1973, the integration and unification of textbooks has become with what the Malaysian Chinese concerned most, particularly with the ‘de-Sinicization’on lower-secondary history textbooks.
The purpose of ‘de-Sinicization’is to make the quantity of grand-China-history less than before and, much less than other history narratives, particularly with relative to Malaysia-centered history. For textbooks editors, however, some dilemmas and challenges on the reform are emerging, especially about the unbalance between the ‘China-oriented’and the ‘Malaysia-oriented for Chinese schools in Malaysia. Besides, the challenges are also from the teachers’ unfamiliarity with Malaysia history. For Dong Zong, the history textbooks reform is not completely successful. |
