In this study, the effect of carbon content in the steel on the growth and high-temperature oxidation behaviors of the hot-dipping aluminide layer was investigated by hot-dip aluminizing of AISI 1005, 1040 and 1080 carbon steels containing 0.05% ~ 0.80% carbon. The results show the hot-dipped aluminide coating consists of Al topcoat, Fe-Al intermetallic layer and pearlite. Steel substrate which contains higher carbon content exhibits thinner Fe-Al intermetallic layer and higher amount of pearlite trapped in the aluminide layer. In addition, the difference of carbon content between those steel substrates resulted in the diverse performance of high-temperature oxidation resistance of the aluminide coatings. Aluminide coating on the low carbon content steel exhibits a better oxidation resistance. |
