Widespread applications of decorative ceramic coatings have been seen in sanitary wares, jewelry, and cellular phones and been tremendously studied in recent years. The development of these products is also evolving. An arc ion plating (AIP) technique (for titanium emission) in combination with magnetron sputtering method (for copper emission) was utilized in one single chamber in order to synthesize copper-containing TiCxNyOz antimicrobial coatings for decorative and protection purposes in this study. Experimental results showed that the copper-containing TiCxNyOz coating greatly enhanced the apparent surface hardness, wear resistance, and corrosion resistance of the Cu-35Zn material, in comparison with a pre-electroplated Cu-35Zn material. The appearance of the coatings noticeably varied in color from golden yellow, red, blue to eventually purple as the deposition time (10 ~ 60 s) increased under a constant oxygen flow. Moreover, under simultaneous constant flows of acetylene and oxygen, the appearance of the coatings varied in color in the same way, except that L* of CIE chromaticity decreased to a lower level. |
