The steel piles of wharf immersed in seawater have suffered great impact of waves and serious corrosion problems, particularly the steel piles within the splash zone, tidal zone and continuously immersed zone. Once corrosion gets progressively worse without notice, eventually will lead to structural failure and decrease the service life of the steel piles and form a serious threat to the security of wharf. Therefore, by means of carrying out corrosion inspection and assessment programs, the effective maintenance of wharf structures can be achieved to decrease the corrosion risk. The corrosion inspection objects of underwater structure of wharf involve the submerged steel piles and the existing galvanic cathodic protection system on the steel piles. The general inspection items include visual inspection, material thickness and corrosion rate measurements, cathodic protection potential measurement, anode weight and service-life assessment, seawater analysis etc. #101 wharf in Kaohsiung harbor has been examined to discuss the corrosion inspection technique on the steel piles and the assessment of cathodic protection system's effectiveness. Recommendations for maintenance are also suggested. |
