The oxidation behavior of the Cu-Al binary alloys (containing Cu-1, 5, and 10Al, all in wt.%) was studied over the temperature range 700~1000℃ in air. The results indicated that the oxidation kinetics of Cu-Al binary alloys followed the parabolic rate law at all temperatures, and the oxidation rate constants decreased with increasing Al content but increased with increasing temperature. The scales formed on Cu-Al alloys were strongly dependent on Al-content, consisting of CuO / Cu2O for Cu-1Al, of mostly CuAl2O4 and minor CuO for Cu-5Al, and of mostly Al2O3 and minor CuAl2O4 for Cu-10Al. The formation of CuAl2O4 and Al2O3 was responsible for the reduction of oxidation rates for high Al-content alloys, as compared to those of pure Cu. |
