In the current global environment, where competition is increasingly between supply chains rather than among individual firms, supply chain integration (SCI) is more critical than ever. Effective SCI helps reduce unnecessary costs, thereby improving an organisation's competitiveness. Although many studies have found a positive relationship between SCI and the operational performance of the focal firm, integration between dry ports (DP) and seaports (SP), and the impact of this integration dyad on seaport performance, have not been well explored. This research addresses this gap by investigating the impact of DP–SP integration on seaports' operational performance as well as customer satisfaction, which in turn impacts seaport financial performance. Through a comprehensive literature review, a conceptual model was developed that comprises the key constructs examined in previous studies. 14 semi-structured in-depth interviews with key members of the Vietnamese maritime supply chain were conducted. The outcome aligns with the literature, which suggests that DP–SP integration in Vietnam could be examined through information integration, operational integration, relationship integration, and geographical integration. The integration could also lead to improvements in operations, customer satisfaction, and financial performance. These qualitative findings may help policymakers, port authorities, and operators in Vietnam formulate policies and strategies to improve port competitiveness. They can also serve as useful references for ports in other countries seeking to advance their DP–SP integration. |
