Traumatic brain injury is one of the leading causes of death and severe disability in infants and young children, with millions of cases occurring globally each year. The most frequent causes include falls, traffic accidents, and drops. Due to the rapid developmental stage of the infant brain, the neural structures and functions are relatively fragile, and brain injury can have long-term adverse effects on emotional, cognitive, and behavioral development. This case involves a 1-year-old female infant who suffered a high-impact traffic accident, resulting in symptoms such as skull fracture, loss of consciousness, and immobility. Brain computed tomography showed fracture of Left temporal bone, acute Subdural Hemorrhage along posterior falx and Right tentorium and traumatic Subarachnoid Hemorrhage at bilateral cerebral sulci/fissures. After emergency treatment, she was admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) for further management.
Following one month of integrated treatment, the patient's level of consciousness, muscle tone, and motor activity gradually improved. She was subsequently transferred to a general ward for continued monitoring and was currently undergoing rehabilitation, including swallowing training and physical therapy. This case illustrates the role of Traditional Chinese Medicine pattern diagnosis and systematic treatment in the care of an infant with traumatic brain injury. It may serve as a reference for integrated Chinese medicine care in pediatric emergency settings and may help improve developmental outcomes in affected children. |
