Referring to the quantitative research agenda on populism in a Taiwanese social context, the study aims to investigate the holistic worldview of young supporters (ages 21-30) of Ko Wen-Je, a third-party candidate in 2024 Taiwanese presidential election. This effort entailed a switch in research framework from populism to youth study. According to our interviews, the''youth Ko-fans'' are characterized by a sense of relative deprivation. Specifically, they aspire to break free from what they perceive to be existing living constraints, but the details of generational inequality (especially regarding housing justice) lead them to believe that Taiwan’s established parties are no longer likely or capable of fulfilling their needs and expectations. Due to the cognitive context formed by the differences in generational memories and the cognition of relative inequality, the youth ''Ko-fans'' have established a''pragmatic domestic-politics'' worldview that stands apart from a nationalist political agenda, one that serves as the basis of the core-value discourse for their political engagement. |
