Multimodal Communication Strategies in Admission Notifications and Perioperative Information Delivery for Ophthalmic Surgery
Surgical safety is a critical component of patient safety, and the completeness of preoperative preparation directly influences surgical quality. Traditional telephone notifications are often hindered by missed calls, message distortion, and the inability to review information, which may result in inadequate preparation. This study evaluated the effectiveness of a multimodal communication strategy—combining LINE, short message service, and QR codes with multimedia patient education—implemented for inpatient notifications and perioperative information delivery in ophthalmology patients, compared with conventional telephone notifications. A randomized controlled design was adopted, enrolling 100 patients assigned to either the experimental group (multimodal communication) or the control group (telephone notification). Outcome measures included the completeness of preoperative preparation, anxiety levels, satisfaction, and staff time costs. Results showed that the experimental group achieved a 100% preparation completeness rate, significantly higher than the control group’s 60%. Anxiety scores were markedly lower in the experimental group (1.8 vs. 6.4), and satisfaction scores were substantially higher (96 vs. 74). Staff time costs per patient decreased from 6.5 minutes to 0.8 minutes, representing an 88% savings. All differences were statistically significant (p < 0.001). This study demonstrates that a multimodal communication strategy can enhance preoperative preparation and patient safety, reduce anxiety, and alleviate staff workload. The approach offers strong practical value and may serve as a reference model for healthcare institutions seeking to optimize communication processes.
