This article introduces the Chinese Language Buddy Program implemented by the Chinese Language Center at National Chung Hsing University from April to November 2025, outlining its design principles, implementation process, and major outcomes. The program was conducted under the Ministry of Education's ''2024-2025 Mandarin Proficiency Enhancement Program for International Students'' and aimed to provide international students with consistent language practice and cultural support beyond the classroom. Through a structured system of recruitment, training, meet-ups, matching procedures, and feedback mechanisms, buddies gradually developed into local companions who offered not only linguistic assistance but also cultural navigation. Program results indicate that international students demonstrated notable improvements in language confidence, everyday communicative competence, and cultural understanding. Local buddies also enhanced their intercultural sensitivity and language-facilitation skills through sustained interaction. Challenges such as pairing stability, scheduling coordination, and varying depths of engagement emerged during implementation, suggesting the need for further refinement in responsibility mechanisms, tiered guidance, and digital management tools. Overall, the outcomes confirm that the buddy system effectively bridges classroom learning with real-life application and functions as a crucial support model for strengthening language practice and cultural integration. |
