The Chinese Language Center at National Chung Hsing University originated as the ''Division of Chinese'' under the university's Language Center in 2006 and was officially upgraded in 2021 to an instructional and outreach unit under the College of Liberal Arts. Its establishment responds to the rapid global rise in Mandarin learning and aligns with Taiwan's policies on higher-education internationalization and bilingual development, aiming to build a professional and institutionalized Mandarin education system. Since the upgrade, the Center has actively integrated campus and external resources, enhanced curricular structures, expanded recruitment outcomes, and-through cultural experiences, study tours, teacher training, and international collaboration-gradually developed a multi-layered ecosystem encompassing language education, cultural engagement, international exchange, and teacher preparation. In curriculum development, the Center centers its instruction on multi-level Mandarin courses, culture-based thematic courses, and oral-skills training, supplemented by proficiency screening tools, elective classes, and workplace Mandarin to form a comprehensive and flexible learning model. In teacher preparation, the Center collaborates with language-related departments to promote the ''Mandarin Teaching Credit Program'' and training courses, strengthening future teachers' intercultural competence and practical instructional skills. Internationally, through participation in the Ministry of Education's ''Taiwan Huayu BEST Program,'' the Center has established long-term partnerships with multiple U.S. universities, advancing overseas teacher deployment, short-term training programs, Mandarin course export, and proficiency-test outreach-expanding Taiwan's global visibility in Mandarin education. Since 2024, the Center has also taken part in the ''Chinese Proficiency Enhancement Program for International Students,'' supporting language practice and local integration through buddy programs, cultural activities, and intercultural tasks. Overall, the Chinese Language Center is progressively shaping a professionalized, internationalized, and digitally enhanced model of Mandarin education. This article adopts a mixed narrative-analytical approach to examine the Center's achievements in curriculum development, academic program construction, international cooperation, and learning-support systems, while also outlining strategic directions for strengthening instructional quality, deepening global engagement, and expanding the impact of Taiwan's Mandarin education. |
